Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #59

-
Welcome back for another weekly TTM success post. I hope everyone has had a great graphing week. I was watching a video earlier this week of wrestling super star John Cena signing 3,000 autographs to sell in about an hour and 15 minutes. While it was a pretty impressive feat what I noticed was the rushed signatures with just his initial's and not a full signature. This got me thinking. Celebs signatures have changed alot over the years. Gone are the days when celebrities took pride in signing an autograph. Now most celebs scribal a few wavy lines and maby write the first letters of the name, while others scrawl something that looks nothing like a signature or even a name. I love a nice fully signed autograph. Some celebs still take the time to fully sign for people like the ones that returned this week. Richard Petty has one of the nicest autographs out there. He has signed for years and takes pride in his signature and has been amazing to his fans. Today we are lucky to just get some ink on the paper in the form of some lines or scribbles. I can kind of understand the IP graphing situations when a bunch of people are waiting outside but i still dont like it maby im just old school and actually like my autographs to resemble the persons name but probably like the rest of us collectors ill take whatever they give me and be grateful. Anyways on to this weeks TTM successes. Monday brought two returns. First a quick ten day wait for Michael Madsen to sign and return my Doors DVD cover. Great return from an amazing actor. To finish off the day I received a great addition to my Friday the 13th collection when both pictures returned signed from Thom Mathews. I love "The Return of the Living Dead" also and I'm happy to finally get Thom's autograph and it took just under two months to return. Thursday brought a RTS and 3 great returns. First a RTS from Billy Corgan. I noticed he was the current president of TNA wrestling so I sent a letter to the main office but unfortunately it was returned pretty quickly. The first return was from the writer of my favorite Star Trek movie "The Wrath of Khan" Nicholas Meyer. He signed my DVD cover and also sent us a nice thank you card and it only took nine days to return. He is also one of the writers working on the new upcoming Star Trek show. Next another amazing Star Trek TOS return from Sean Kenney. After only 24 days he signed both pictures we sent and he also sent us a signed bookmark about his new book and a nice thank you note. Im super happy with this one and its just in time for the upcoming 50th anniversary of the original series next month. To finish off the day a super cool return from Richard Roundtree who played the original Shaft. Very cool return and only took one and a half months to come back. To finish off this great TTM week we received both pictures back signed by legendary actor Jon Voight. Super cool success he's been amazing in this season of "Ray Donavon" and it took just under four months to return. That's it for this week. Have a great weekend and ill be back next week with more TTM autographs and addresses.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #58

-
Welcome back to another weekly TTM success post. This week I thought I'd talk a little more about Autopens or AP for short. Most of you already know what an AP is but for you new collectors that don't. An AP is a machine that is used to automatically recreate genuine looking autographs and signatures. These machines have been around since the early part of the 20th century and every US president since Eisenhower has used an AP to sign documents and to fill autograph requests. Kennedy was one of the first Presidents to heavily use an AP though. AP's work from a template that has been created from a real autograph. A pen or sharpie is attached to a mechanical arm that then can reproduce signatures on documents, photos and books. They even make AP's that can sign on odd shaped surfaces like baseballs, golfballs and bats. The templates can be changed out to accommodate different signers or different styles of someone's signature. To the untrained eye AP signatures can resemble an actual signature. Luckily for us collectors a machine can't quite duplicate the subtle differences that occurs when someone actually hand signs something and the AP leaves clues that points to it not being a real signature. With a little training of the eye you will start to notice a few key indicators of an AP signature. The first one is Dots at the ends of words or letters caused by hard or abrupt stops. The AP comes to a stop at the end and then pauses for a brief moment before lifting off the paper. This leaves a darker distinct dot especially at the beginning and end. This is normally not seen in a hand signed autograph. That's because humans write faster and more smoothly than the machine. This usually leaves the ink thinning out and tapering off at the end and doesn't suddenly stop like the AP. The next thing to look for is shaky or wobbly lines. These are the most noticeable AP trait. These normally occur on the longer straighter sections of the signatures or sometimes in the loops. This is caused by the AP trying to sign to fast and that leaves the signature with wavy lines that should normally be straight. The final thing to look for is the Ink flow. In a real hand written signature the ink flow and the width of the ink line have distinct variations as the signer moves the pen at different speeds, angles and pressures through the entire autograph so you can see slight variations in the ink color and width of the line. An AP writes everything at the exact same speed, angle and pressure leaving the ink line pretty much the same throughout the entire autograph. I hope this helps some of you new collectors out there to identify the dreaded AutoPen autograph. I know IV seen some AP signatures that have look almost real while others are obviously AP's with the above mentioned traits. Anyways I hope this helps now lets get on to this weeks TTM successes. Monday was a super TTM day with six returns. First with a quick seven days to return we received both pictures we sent to Russell Todd back signed. I love "Chopping Mall" it's on my top favorite horror film list along with so many other great horror films. Next a very cool return from the writer of "Friday the 13th" Victor Miller. He signed all three pictures we sent him and only took ten days to return. After that a great addition to our Aliens collection when we received both our picture and autograph card back signed from Ricco Ross after only a month and a half. The next success came from a VV attempt to Jesse Eisenberg. He signed one of the two pictures we sent and only took a month and a half to return. After that a great return from Alan Alda. I'm a huge "M*A*S*H" fan and its so awesome to finally add him with the rest of my cast collection and it took just over two months to return. To finish off this super TTM day I received my "SOAP" DVD cover back signed from Robert Guillaume. Great success and took eight months and one day to return. To finish off the week Saturday brought one last return. After only four months and on my 5th attempt using various addresses I finally got a reply from country music legend Dolly Parton. IV tried multiple times and either got a rejection letter or nothing back but my pictures unsigned but not this time. She sent my photo back unsigned but included a nice signed 8x10. Im super happy with this success. I expected to see a Pre Print when I opened it but was pleasantly surprised when it was a real autograph. Well that's it for this week. The Saints are gone so its back to strictly TTM for us for awhile but that's fine. Graphing is graphing. Be it in person or TTM its all the same great hobby to us. Have a great weekend and ill be back next week with more TTM autograph collecting goodness.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs Special Graphing the Saints Bonus Post #9

-
Welcome back for another special In Person Graphing bonus post. Today was the final day for the Saints training camp here in West Virginia. As soon as they're finished this afternoon they fly out to Texas to train with and play a pre season game against the Texans before finally heading home to Louisiana. Since it was our final graphing day we headed over early to watch the practice and to make sure we didn't miss anything. You have to remember we live in the middle of nowhere West Virginia so unless we seriously travel we just dont have many in person graphing opportunities so we definitely take full advantage of the ones we do get and with the flood cancelling out the PGA tour event the Saints camp is our one big event this year. That's why we do alot of our graphing TTM. I'd love to get a convention of some sort here in WV. We occasionally get one in Virginia but that's about it. Anyways back to the Saints. Since last time before they left to play the Patriots almost everyone came over to sign but we only expected the usual 8-10 a day so we didn't come prepared but not today. We showed up with enough pictures to cover everyone if needed along with extra sharpies because the players have been using their own the entire time and some have started to run dry. We watched another great practice. Its definitely been an experience attending this training camp and I highly recommend attending one if you ever get the chance. Not just for autographs but the entire experience. Its really been so much fun. Winter got settled in to the kids area and I found a spot around the middle of the signing line. I talked with another local collector I knew and waited for the practice to end. Our old annoying buddy the "Hey Iv got you on my sign" guy returned today and aggravated every player he could before practice ended. Once they finally finished up alot of players headed inside but plenty came over to sign. We both worked on a few multi pictures. Winter kept asking them to sign the picture but alot signed the folder she used to hold the picture for signing. After they finished up the Quarterbacks headed over and signed down the line. I got nice pictures of Grayson and McCown signed. While Winter worked on a picture of all three together. I had a nice 8x10 ready for Drew today and as he came closer I opened my folder to get it ready and the wind blew several pictures away. Luckily the one of Brees landed right at his feet. He proceeded to pick it up and asked if anyone had dropped it. I said yes I had and then he signed it and handed it back then signed my 8x10. Wow such a nice guy. He has really went out of his way for the fans while he's been here. After I finished mine I walked down to watch Winter get Brees. He signed her multi picture of the QB's and then she asked him for his sweatband off his wrist. After asking several times he finally took it off and handed it to her then signed another 4x6 for her. That all made her day. She's been trying to get one from him the entire camp. After she was finished we packed up and headed home. We're sad its over but we had the best time ever. Today's total was 33 autographs and all together we managed to get 236 Saints autographs with 17 of those being Drew Brees autographs for our collection. The New Orleans Saints have been so amazing to the fans here in West Virginia. We hope they have an amazing season. Sadly this ends our IP graphing at the Saints training camp so until next year enjoy a last few pictures and today's autographs from the New Orleans Saints Training Camp here in Beautiful Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs Special Graphing The Saints bonus post #8

-

Welcome back for another special In person graphing bonus post. I headed out to the New Orleans Saints training camp solo today. My graphing partner and daughter Winter went to the West Virginia state fair today while I headed to the Saints but she will be with me Wednesday for the final day. When I arrived this morning I had no problem finding a spot along the line. I got settled in and proceeded to get everything ready for graphing time then watched the team practice. It was a pretty relaxed crowd today with one obsessed fan entertaining the line and the players by screaming at every player that passed by. He had made a poster with all the players on it and he wanted to get it signed very badly and he made sure everyone knew that as he screamed "IV got you on my poster" to every single player. The line and the team all got a few good laughs in. Practice ended early today and alot of players came over to sign when they finished up. As always the players were so nice and signed and took pictures with everyone along the line. I worked on Winters football adding 12 more signatures to it and then I got a few more pictures signed from players already on the ball. After the QB challenge was over Drew Brees and the other two Quarterbacks came over and signed for everyone down the line. Winter already had them on the ball so I had pictures ready for all three to sign. I had a great time and racked up another 16 autographs today. They have tomorrow off then Wednesday is there final day here in West Virginia and you know we'll be there. So until then have a great day and enjoy a few pictures and the autographs from today's New Orleans Saints training camp.
