Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #90

-
Welcome back to another weekly TTM success post. Why do we collect autographs? What is it that makes people want to spend alot of time and a bunch of money obtaining signatures on little pieces of paper either In Person or TTM? For some its purely for profit. For others it's about nostalgia. They want a memento from one of their hero's or idols. Some want to own a piece of history through the signatures of the people that created it. Then there's one's who do it because they truly love this hobby. They spend hours researching, studying signatures and signing habbits, they travel all over the world and stand out in all kinds of weather battling security just to wait for chance meeting with a celeb and remember it's never a sure thing. Sometimes after all the work they still get the brush off and walk away empty handed. If its a diehard TTMer they put in a ton of time and money also. Usually they start as kids and do it for the joy and excitement it brings and it carries on into adulthood. They've been bitten by the graphing bug and they're in it for life. Sure they might take the occasional break but they almost always come back to the hobby. I have always heard of gold fever but something even worse than that may be ink fever. It just takes that first In person or TTM success and you're hooked for life. Anyways on to this weeks successes. Monday brought one amazing return to start the week off. After just under three months we received a pre signed picture back from legendary composer John Williams. Friday brought two very cool returns. First after just under two months we received our index card and autograph card back signed by one of our favorite authors Beverly Cleary who will be 101 years young the 12th of April. To finish off the day we received both pictures back signed by legendary musician Charlie Daniels. I tried to get him in person last summer after a concert but unfortunately he just waved at me and the two others trying to graph before he darted into his tour bus so it's great to finally get him in our collection and it took just under four months for him to return. That's it for this week. Have a great graphing weekend and I'll be back next week with more TTM autographs and addresses.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #89

-
Welcome back for another weekly TTM success post. Is it just me or are there other collectors out there who think that a few postal employees are amassing a very nice autograph collection at the expense of some of us TTM collectors lol. Now I have talked about being patient when seeing others getting returns back from a celeb and yours hasn't showed up yet. We know all the options but maby more get "misplaced" then we know. I'd hate to think this actually happens but IV had several SASE's returned back to me blatantly opened and my pics removed. I'm not talking about a sorting machine mishap opening or tearing the envelope even though that has happened but usually with my signed pictures intact. I'm talking about envelopes that have been opened by human hands. That's why I mark a small code on the backs of my SASE's now. This way at least when it does happen I know who to rewrite. I have even had celebs return my pictures in an unsealed SASE but luckily none have fallen out in transit so far. I use stick and seal envelopes so no licking or getting them wet to get them closed but some still lick them and then send it back unsealed. Oh well maby I'm just being paranoid but maby not lol anyways now on to this weeks TTM successes. Friday brought the first return of the week when we received both pictures back signed from DJ Qualls. We love Z Nation so this is a great return and addition to our cast collection. This was our second attempt using this address. Our first try was over two years ago and never returned but this time it only took two months for our pictures to come back signed. To finish off the week Saturday brought two more returns. First after only three weeks we received a signed index card from William Smithers. We sent two pictures from Star Trek TOS but he didn't sign or return those. At least he sent the IC. To finish off the week we received a signed 8x10 from Governor Chris Christie after just over a month. We sent a 4x6 photo for him to sign but he sent what looks like an auto penned 8x10 back. That's it for this week. Have a great graphing weekend and I'll be back next week with more TTM autographs and addresses.

Cpt. Caveman's TTM Autographs #88

-
Welcome back for another weekly TTM success post. I hope everyone has had a great graphing week. This week I wanted to talk about authentication. Now sure you can spend a bunch of $ and send your prized autographs to a third party authenticator (TPA) like PSA, JSA or Beckett but unless you are selling your autographs I just don't see the point of paying hard earned money for nothing more than an opinion. Most of the time we have no clue who looked at the items being authenticated and gave them a thumbs up or down and mistakes are becoming more and more frequent. For me one of the best parts of this hobby other than seeing a return in my mail box is studying the signatures I receive and comparing them with known authentic examples to see if the celebs actually signed or had a secretary do it. It takes time to train the eye but spend enough time comparing signatures and it starts getting easier to spot a fake or non authentic autographs. If this isn't an option or doesn't interest you then I suggest asking on an autograph group you may be a member of or ask other more experienced collectors for help. Here's a great site for authenticity questions http://live.autographmagazine.com/ and here is a database for autopen and secretarial signatures http://autograph-market.com/isitreal/forgery-reference-database to get you started. Just be prepared you don't always get the answer you want to hear. It stinks to find out that super expensive autograph you purchased years ago is nothing but a worthless fake or a favorite TTM return turns out to be a secretarial. If nothing else you learn a valuable lesson and hopefully avoid the same mistakes in the future. Unfortunately alot of the time I see people getting all butt hurt when told the items not authentic. They ask for an opinion but refuse any negative feedback and grasp at straws like saying one letter kinda looks similar to authentic examples when nothing else looks right and its an obvious fake. So you can waste time and money and use a TPA or you can learn more about this amazing hobby and do your own research and authentication. Anyways now on to this weeks TTM successes. Monday brought two amazing returns. First after only three months we received both pictures back signed from one of my all time favorite musicians James Taylor. To finish off the day we received both cards we sent back signed by Dirk Nowitzki after only one month. Tuesday brought a super cool via venue success from Cate Blanchett after only one month wait. Friday brought one return when we received one of the two pictures we sent back signed from James Daris. He also sent an signed handwritten thank you letter. He's a great addition to our Star Trek TOS collection and took just under a month to return. To finish off the week Saturday brought one last return when we received both pictures back signed from Robert Redford after just under one month. I'm not sure about these yet. Some say he actually signs and some say his secretary signs so I'll have to get back with you on that. That's it for this week. Have a great graphing weekend and I'll be back next week with more TTM autographs and addresses.
